COMMERCE SECRETARY TO VIEW STUDENT ROBOTICS PROGRAM AT MARYLAND HIGH SCHOOL
Visit to Highlight Importance of Math and Science Education in Maintaining a Competitive and Innovative American Workforce

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez will highlight the importance of maintaining America’s competitive and innovative edge during a visit with a team of students at Col. Zadok Magruder High School in Rockville, Md. The team will demonstrate firsthand how a creative robotics program can help prepare today’s students for the science and technology careers that contribute to U.S. innovation, global competitiveness and improved quality of life.

The 24 students in grades 9-12, members of the Magruder Robotics Club, are participating for the second straight year in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an annual challenge in which young people are paired with science and engineering professionals to design and build a robot in only six weeks that will solve a designated engineering problem or perform an assigned task. Five researchers from the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are currently working with the Magruder students.
