Unveiling the findings of a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) study, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), along with Senators Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) today assailed the Bush Administration for its failure to crack down on pay inequity. The report, which Rep. Maloney and Senators Harkin and Clinton requested along with Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) shows that the federal government has failed to adequately monitor enforcement of our nation’s pay discrimination laws.

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) released the following statement today on the seventh anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks:“Today, our nation is united in memory. As we observe the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, the emotions of that day return. But the horror of those few minutes is mirrored by the ongoing plight of those who rushed into the toxic clouds at Ground Zero immediately following the attacks—volunteers from every state and many nationalities.

Washington, D.C. - Today, Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), and Vito Fossella (R-NY) released a letter they wrote to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Michael Leavitt to express their concerns about ongoing delays in HHS's program to provide health care to 9/11 responders and others sickened by the attacks who live outside the metropolitan New York area.  In June, HHS awarded a contract to Logistics Health Incorporated (LHI), a Wisconsin firm run by former HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson, to provide 9/11 medical monitoring and treatment services nationwide.

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Vice Chair of the Joint Economic Committee, issued the following statement regarding the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ August 2008 employment situation, which showed that the unemployment rate spiked up sharply to 6.1 percent and non-farm payrolls fell by 84,000 jobs. Since December, the economy has shed 758,000 private sector jobs, but due to government hiring, the economy has lost only 605,000 jobs overall.
