Williams Sworn-In As GSA's Regional Administrator for National Capital Region
December 3, 2001 WASHINGTON, DC - At a special ceremony this morning, Virginia native Donald Carey Williams was sworn-in as Regional Administrator for the National Capital Region by GSA Administrator Stephen A. Perry. "Donald's ability and commitment are important assets to the Bush Administration," Mr. Perry said. "His experience in the private and public sectors will be a tremendous benefit for GSA as he steps forward in his role as our Regional Administrator in the national capital area." In his role as principal executive for the National Capital Region, Mr. Williams will head a GSA workforce of 1,867 associates across the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. Headquartered in Washington D.C., GSA's National Capital Region has an annual operating budget of nearly $1.9 billion and a real estate portfolio that includes 171 government-owned buildings and leased space in 430 commercial buildings. Mr. Williams' career reflects extensive experience in supervising real estate transactions, construction review and oversight and procurement and surplus property functions gained from his most recent post as Director of the Department of General Services for the Commonwealth of Virginia, the state equivalent of GSA. He also gained considerable management experience from within the private sector, working at the Ford Motor Company for 10 years. While at Ford, Mr. Williams was assigned to the Distribution Office of Ford Division and, prior to 1978, was an accountant within the assembly division. "To be selected to serve our nation at this historic time is truly a high honor. I am grateful to President Bush and Administrator Perry for giving me this opportunity to lead the impressive staff of the National Capital Region. It is my goal that we will be known as the organization that enables our customers to succeed," Mr. Williams said. Mr. Williams graduated magna cum laude from the University of Richmond's School of Business Administration in 1976. He later graduated from Old Dominion University in 1979 with a master of business administration degree. A longtime resident of Chesapeake, Virginia, Mr. Williams also previously served as Director of the Chesapeake Division of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and as Planning Commissioner for the City of Chesapeake. He and his wife, Nancy, currently reside in Chesterfield County, Virginia. They have two sons, Thadd and Carey. Mr. Williams and his family are members of St. Matthias' Episcopal Church in Midlothian, Virginia. GSA is a centralized federal procurement and property management agency created by Congress to improve government efficiency and help federal agencies better serve the public. It acquires, on behalf of federal agencies, office space, equipment, telecommunications, information technology, supplies and services.
