GSA Offers Federal Webmaster Institute Leadership Course Series TrainingGSA# 9432 In support of Vice President Al Gore's information enterprise and global internet infrastructure initiatives, the U.S. General Services Administration will be offering a series of federal webmaster leadership training courses beginning August 20. The training will assist federal webmasters, program managers and specialists in developing an awareness of policy and technical issues, trends and problems related to the implementation of the internet and related technologies within the federal government. The overall objective of the program is to improve the ability of federal agencies to utilize the internet to respond to the information needs of their customers. One thing that was very apparent during monthly federal webmaster forum meetings, according to forum co-chair Bernita Tart, was the widespread need for focused training regarding how to apply paper-based policies and management methodologies to federal internet/intranet sites. "This is the first course of it's kind," Tart said, "that addresses policy issues in the context of the internet for federal webmasters and I am confident these courses will prove to be of tremendous value to agencies across government." According to Richard Kellett of GSA's Office of Governmentwide Policy, the Internet creates unique challenges for federal employees to apply policies developed within a framework of paper-based processes. "Federal employees implementing and using the internet need training in both policies and technology. Issues such as trademarks, privacy, security and other issues can create land mines for Federal employees who have not had training in how to apply these policies in an internet context." Courses have been scheduled from August through October 1997. The leadership course series consists of a basic course and eight modules that address policy, management and technical issues related to federal web sites and their content. The basic course -- the Federal Webmaster's Survival Course -- covers all topics of the eight modules and more. The series is designed to allow webmasters and managers to select those courses that are most appropriate to their needs. The two-day basic course is offered August 20-21 and again on September 30-October 1. Completion of the basic course and three follow-on modules earns a certificate and the right to use the Federal Webmaster Institute logo (trademark pending) on the participant's web site.
