James Serum is the founder of SciTek Ventures, a consulting company that works with early stage technology companies. Before founding SciTek in early 2002, he was executive president and chief operating officer of Viaken Systems, a company that he co-founded after retiring from the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) in 1999, and that provides research informatics solutions to the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Dr. Serum began his career at HP in 1973 as an applications chemist in mass spectrometry. He held numerous R&D and Marketing management positions at HP and in 1992 was named General Manager for Mass Spectrometry, Infrared and Protein Chemical Systems. Dr. Serum was the founder of HP's Bioscience Products business, and served as chairman of HP's Pharmaceutical Business Council. He also served as co-chairman of the HP Corporate R&D Council. Dr. Serum received a B.A. in Chemistry from Hope College and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Colorado.
