GSA's Nextel Contract Now Allows Federal Employees To Use Second Line for Personal UseGSA # 9618 November 1, 1999 WASHINGTON, DC -- The U.S. General Services Administration's Federal Technology Service (FTS) has modified its Nextel cellular telephone contract for Enhanced Specialized Mobile Radio (ESMR), Equipment and Services to allow for activation of the second digital wireless telephone line for Federal employees' personal use. The Nextel i1000+ telephone instruments feature two separate digital cellular lines, text/numeric paging, and a digital two-way radio. The first line is used by the customer agency for official government communications. With the recent modification, Federal employees can now use the second line for personal use. Upon activation of the second line, Nextel will issue a separate account that will be billed directly to the employee. The government has no liability for service on the second telephone line and all cost will be the sole responsibility of the employee. Service agreements are available for $10.00 per month for pay-as-you-go cellular or $25.00 per month for 250 anytime cellular minutes. A Weekend plan may be added to either of the above service agreements for an additional $10.00, giving the second line user 1000 Weekend cellular minutes. Long distance service is available for $0.15 per minute. In addition to offering the second line activations, the modification to the contract includes new equipment and accessory pricing that gives the government even deeper discounts under the contract with GSA. "We are extremely pleased that Nextel has improved and expanded their initial offering to the Federal community," said Dennis Fischer, Commissioner of GSA's Federal Technology Service. "This modification to their contract with us will allow an even bigger savings to the Federal government. Savings to the Federal community also equate to savings to the taxpayer." Fischer added that Nextel has become a valuable partner for us. "We look forward to continuing that partnership."
