The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced today that it will grant a license to Fairfax County to build a radio tower on the
District of Columbia's Lorton Correctional Complex. The tower is a critical component of the county's upgraded public safety communications
system, according to Fairfax officials.
GSA has the authority to grant the license, because it is the temporary landholder and disposer of the 3,000-acre property, under the Lorton
Technical Corrections Act of 1998. The GSA license is contingent on Federal Communications Commission approval, which was granted this summer.
The District of Columbia is scheduled to vacate the property by Dec. 31, 2001. Congress has ordered GSA to dispose of the property after the
District's departure according to a Fairfax County plan. The current plan, which the Board of Supervisors adopted this summer, calls for much of
Lorton to be used for parks and recreation.
