Kudos for GSA Smart Card HandbookGSA #10072 March 19, 2004 WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Government Smart Card Handbook, published by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), won praise this week from the Smart Card Alliance, a non-profit industry group. "This is the most comprehensive and complete reference on smart cards currently available," Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance of Princeton Junction, N.J., said in a press release. The Government Smart Card Handbook, published in February and endorsed by The Smart Card Interagency Advisory Board, provides lessons learned and technical advances during the past four years, when the federal government issued more than four million smart cards. It updates the 2000 handbook. “The handbook would not have been possible without the collaboration of the Office of Management and Budget and many agencies, including the Departments of Homeland Security, Interior, State, Veterans Affairs, the National Aeronautic and Space Administration and others,” said Mary Mitchell, GSA’s program executive for E-Government policy. “Interviews with leading experts from across academia, industry, and government were conducted to assure accuracy and relevance of the material.” The handbook is valuable in customizing smart-card programs to meet individual federal agency requirements. Additional expertise is available through GSA’s Government Smart Card Contract, administered by the Center for Smart Card Solutions of the Federal Technology Service.
