Introducing the Marine Geoscience Leadership Symposium

The Marine Geoscience Leadership Symposium, March 23-27, 2009 in Washington, D.C., crosses the boundaries between marine geology and geophysics and provides early career researchers with insight into leading a successful research career. This new endeavor will provide a forum for presenting cutting-edge research to peers and distinguished members of the scientific community, as well as provide valuable leadership training, including knowledge of U.S. science agencies and effective techniques to approaching decision makers and legislators. Participants will engage in small group discussions, participate in proposal writing workshops, and meet with funding agencies, media representatives, and policymakers.

Robot Vehicle Surveys Deep Sea Off Pacific Northwest

Autonomous underwater vehicle "eyes"sites for future ocean observatory

The first scientific mission with Sentry, a newly developed robot capable of diving as deep as 5,000 meters (3.1 miles) into the ocean, has been successfully completed by scientists and engineers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and the University of Washington (UW).

The vehicle surveyed and helped pinpoint several proposed deep-water sites for seafloor instruments that will be deployed in the National Science Foundation (NSF)'s planned Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI).

Sentry is a state-of-the-art, free-swimming underwater robot that can operate independently, without tethers or other connections to a research ship.

A memo from Bob GagosianRE: reaching out to elected officialsA number of our members and those of you from our community have asked us what approach you might take on educating your congressional delegation with respect to the important work your institutions do in ocean research and education. We have outlined some suggestions for you and encourage you to pursue them. If you have any questions or would like our assistance, we are certainly here to help so please contact either Kevin Wheeler or me.
