Strengthening Newborn Screening in the Middle East and North Africa

Location: Marrakech, Morocco
Purpose: This regional conference on newborn screening provided an opportunity for participants to discuss recent advances in research and technology that have led to the development of more effective detection and treatment of genetic disorders. Participants at this meeting, drawn from the region, Europe, North America, and Asia, had an opportunity to share ideas and mechanisms on how to develop a national newborn screening system, experiences with issues around the expansion of programs including quality assurance/quality control and training, and the management of screenable conditions of interest.
