NCI Comprehensive Minority Biomedical Branch supports the K01 through PAR-06-220 NCI Mentored Career Development Award to Promote Diversity (K01).The branch uses this grant mechanism for the continuing career development of underrepresented minority scientists who have been recipients of an NIH Research Supplement for Underrepresented Minority Award, any National Research Service Award or can demonstrate that they have been supported in a mentored capacity within any research grant equivalent to an NIH peer-reviewed research grant. The purpose of the K01 is to provide support and "protected time" (3, 4, or 5 years) for an intensive, supervised career development experience in the biomedical, behavioral, and/or clinical sciences leading to research independence. | NICHD accepts K01 applications for only three specific research areas: Medical Rehabilitation Medicine, Child Abuse and Neglect, and Population Research. Applicants for the Medical Rehabilitation K01 must have clinical training in a rehabilitation-related profession (e.g., P.T., O.T., R.N., or Speech and Language pathologist), possess a doctoral level degree (e.g., Ph.D., D.Eng., D.Ed.), and be committed to a career as an independent investigator in medical rehabilitation. Applicants for the Child Abuse and Neglect K01 should have experience in relevant disciplines and propose a mentored research program to enable application of novel or highly promising interdisciplinary approaches to the study of child abuse and neglect. Applicants for the Population Research K01 must be junior-level researchers with a research or health professional doctorate degree and must propose a mentored research program that will enhance their ability to conduct scientifically sophisticated studies in the field of population research.

The NIDCD utilizes the K01 Program for the retooling and transition of junior- and midcareer-level scientists and clinicians (generally below the rank of full professor, or the equivalent in nonacademic settings) into two research domains: 1) translational research, i.e., the application of basic research discoveries toward advancing the diagnosis, management and prevention of deafness and other communication disorders; and 2) clinical research.

| Research projects proposed in response to this Announcement will be expected to have a defined impact on the environmental health sciences and be directly responsive to the mission of the NIEHS, which is distinguished from that of other Institutes by its focus on research programs seeking to link the effects of environmental exposures to the cause, mechanisms, moderation, or prevention of a human disease or disorder or relevant pathophysiologic process. Applications must include as part of the justification the specific human disease, dysfunction, pathophysiologic condition, or relevant human biologic process altered, and the specific environmentally relevant toxicant. Examples of environmentally relevant toxicants include industrial chemicals or manufacturing byproducts, metals, pesticides, herbicides, air pollutants and other inhaled toxicants, particulates or fibers, fungal, bacterial, or biologically derived toxins. Agents considered non-responsive to this announcement include, but are not limited to: alcohol, chemotherapeutic agents, radiation which is not the result of an ambient environmental exposure, drugs of abuse, and infectious or parasitic agents. Ecologic, biomonitoring, biotransformation or biodegradation studies are also not responsive. Applicants must demonstrate a significant career shift or career enhancement activity which will achieve research independence upon completion of the program. Preference will be given to candidates whose mentor has NEIHS research grant support.

NINR encourages mentored research scientist development in areas of symptom management, pulmonary, critical care, trauma, reproductive health, end-of-life and palliative care.
NINR limits the length of the K01 award to a 3-year period and generally considers career development applications only from doctorally prepared applicants who will advance the science of nursing.
