Freedom of Information Act
(FOIA)
The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), 5 United States Code 552, allows you to obtain information from various agencies of the federal government.
All Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Requests should be labeled "FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT REQUEST" (also include this on the envelope if the request is mailed). You should be as specific as possible about the records being requested and the records should be described in enough detail so that a knowledgeable official of the activity may locate the record with a reasonable amount of effort. The more information provided about the time frame, document(s) requested, etc., the better the chance that the requested information will be found.
Requesters can submit FOIA requests in writing, by fax or via email.
