Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Enforcement Michael J. Garcia announced today a $50,000 civil penalty and 10 year denial of export privileges against Federal Parts International, Inc, an Atlanta, Georgia company. The penalties are part of an agreement to settle charges that the company shipped automobile parts from the United States to Iran in 1996 in violation of the Export Administration Regulations.
On August 23, 2000, a Federal judge in Atlanta sentenced Federal Parts officers Mehdi Azarin (also known as Michael Azarin) and Farhad Azarin to be imprisoned for six months based upon their guilty pleas to related criminal charges. The judge also fined Mehdi Azarin $5,000. Federal Parts, which also pled guilty to criminal charges, separately was fined $250,000.
The Department of Commerce, through its Bureau of Export Administration, administers and enforces export controls for reasons of national security, foreign policy, nonproliferation, anti-terrorism, and short supply.
Assistant Secretary Garcia commended the effort of Special Agent Patricia Mikol of Export Enforcement's field office in Miami, who investigated the case.
