School Internships Available Woods Hole, MA – The Woods Hole Science Aquarium is offering summer internships for high school students who have finished at least their sophomore year. The 2006 internships are designed for students with a variety of interests, including marine science and marine animals, aquarium operations, writing about marine animals and marine environments, and teaching the public about conservation. Aquarium interns help care for animals, work on special projects, go on collecting trips, and learn about Woods Hole science. The 2006 intern program will run from July 5 through July 28, with the possibility of a two week extension to August 11 for interns who want a longer experience. Students who have finished 10th , 11th or 12th grade and will be at least 16 years old by July 5 may apply. Applications must have American citizenship. Application forms are available in the aquarium and online (http://aquarium.nefsc.noaa.gov/Volunteers/). Applicants must also provide a transcript and two references. E-mail applications are welcome. Applications must be received by March 24. The 2006 interns will be announced by April 5. The Woods Hole Science Aquarium holds approximately 140 species of marine animals. The current collection includes one harbor seal, three endangered Kemp’s ridley turtles, and one threatened loggerhead turtle. The animals are held in several dozen tanks that provide cold water, temperate water, and warm water habitats. The aquarium staff includes two veterinarians, an aquarist, a curator, and a program manager. Visitors to the aquarium in a typical summer week number in the thousands and come from more than 30 states and a dozen foreign countries. The summer intern program is run by the staff of the Woods Hole Science Aquarium, and is a project of the NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service and the Marine Biological Laboratory. The aquarium welcomes applications from students of all backgrounds. Students from groups currently under-represented in marine sciences are especially encouraged to apply – this includes African American, Cape Verdean, Hispanic, and Native American students.
