"Gary Wikfors is an expert in his field and has developed collaborative research efforts with other experts nationally and internationally," said Dr. John Boreman, deputy director of NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center. "Beginning his career as a part-time, temporary lab technician, Gary has worked his way up to the level of a PhD task leader and has made significant research contributions in aquaculture and in the study of microalgae."

The Judith Brennan-Hoskins award is named for a young NOAA Fisheries scientist whose promising research career ended prematurely when she died in 1978. The award, which consists of a certificate and $2,500, is given periodically to an NEFSC scientist to commemorate Brennan-Hoskins' dedicated service and her scientific search for truth and understanding of the natural world.

Wikfors was cited for his collaborations with other scientists; his work as an expert advisor to the aquaculture community; and a long list of publications and presentations. Boreman also noted that Wikfors has served as a mentor to high school and college students, and that he serves on committees for NOAA Fisheries and other organizations such as the Northeast Regional Aquaculture Center.

"Gary is able to maintain high standards in his research while serving the community and continuing to be involved with young scientists and high school students," Boreman said. "He is the kind of scientist who would make Judith Brennan-Hoskins proud."

Wikfors has worked at the Milford laboratory since 1980. He and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Woodbridge, Conn.
