LOS ALAMOS, N.M., September 19, 1997 — Los Alamos National Laboratory hosts the second in a series of quarterly community environmental meetings Wednesday evening (Sept. 24) in Los Alamos to answer questions people may have about the Laboratory's impact on water quality and water quality monitoring.

The public meeting is from 6 to 9 p.m. in Fuller Lodge on Central Avenue.

The Laboratory has agreed to conduct the quarterly meetings as part of a negotiated settlement of a lawsuit brought by the Santa Fe-based Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety under the Clean Air Act, said Harry Otway of Los Alamos' Environment, Safety and Health Division Office.

The program includes presentations on water quality by Steve Rae and Bruce Gallaher of the Laboratory's Water Quality and Hydrology Group. A panel discussion chaired by Denise Fort, a University of New Mexico law professor and chair of the Western Water Review Board, a federal advisory commission on water issues, follows the presentations, said Otway. Panelists include Gallaher, Jay Coghlan of CCNS, David Sarracino of San Ildefonso Pueblo, Gary Valdo of Cochiti Pueblo, Michael Smith of the Pajarito group of the Sierra Club, John Parker of the state Environment Department and a representative from Los Alamos County.

Otway said there also will be exhibits on environmental programs related to water issues.

"Although these meetings originated in response to the settlement of a lawsuit, we are very positive about them," ESH Division Director Dennis Erickson said. "We believe regular meetings with community members to hear about their environmental interests and concerns is the right thing to do."
