LOS ALAMOS, N.M., May 12, 1998 — Los Alamos National Laboratory's Bradbury Science Museum and the Los Alamos Historical Society are co-sponsoring a lecture on New Mexico's early architectural styles Thursday evening at the museum.

Santa Fe architect John Conron of Conron and Woods Architects is the guest speaker for the talk beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the museum's auditorium in downtown Los Alamos, said Pat Berger of the museum, part of Los Alamos' Community Involvement and Outreach Office.

There is no admission to hear Conron's talk, which is part of the museum's evening lecture series. Early attendance is suggested because seating is limited in the auditorium, said Berger.

Conron has been involved in historical preservation work for almost 20 years. The museum and the historical society are holding the talk as part of New Mexico Heritage Preservation Week, which continues through Sunday.

A Yale graduate, Conron moved to Santa Fe in 1952. He was the chief architect for the restoration and renovation of the Palace of the Governors on Santa Fe's downtown plaza.

Conron's architectural firm also designed the remodeling of the state History Library adjacent to the Palace of the Governors.

Conron will talk about the history of architecture in New Mexico, from Juan de Oñate's arrival 400 years ago through current styles, said Berger.

Architecture in Los Alamos also will be discussed, in particular the Lustron houses, of which six stand in Los Alamos, said Berger. The Lustron houses were prefabricated steel houses built by the Lustron Corp. during the Laboratory's Manhattan Project era.

Bradbury Science Museum is located at 15th Street and Central Avenue in downtown Los Alamos. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Admission is free.

For more information, call Berger at 665-0896.
