LOS ALAMOS, N.M., January 25, 2000 — Starting yesterday, the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory implemented a new "9/80" work schedule for its University of California employees. Employees on the new schedule work nine-hour days Monday through Thursday, eight-hour days on Friday, and have a day off every other Friday. The Laboratory established two 9/80 schedules, with alternate Fridays off, to ensure that all critical services and functions are available on Fridays.

Residents of Los Alamos and neighboring communities may have noticed an increase in early morning traffic as the new schedule went into effect on Monday. Many of the Laboratory's UC employees who are following the 9/80 schedule are arriving at work before 8 a.m.

Deputy Laboratory Director for Business Administration and Outreach, Joe Salgado, said, "The new 9/80 schedule is part of our effort to continue to improve the quality of work life here at the Lab. We had extensive feedback from employees saying that they wanted to have this option, and we're glad that it's become a reality."

Although the 9/80 is the new standard Lab schedule, some employees are continuing to work eight-hour days, for reasons such as child care arrangements or programmatic requirements. Currently, the new 9/80 schedule applies only to full-time UC employees, but it will eventually apply to Laboratory contractors in the next several months.
