Laboratory co-hosts afternoon of entrepreneurship

LOS ALAMOS, N.M., November 21, 2000 — The Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory, in partnership with Office of Science and Technology of the New Mexico Economic Development Department and the Santa Fe Economic Development, Inc., will host a business seminar entitled "Cultivating Entrepreneurs: New Mexico's Cash Crop." The event, which will be held Tuesday, Dec. 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Loretto Hotel in Santa Fe, is designed to bring business owners and policymakers together for an afternoon of networking, learning and critical discussion about entrepreneurship.

The event is open to anyone interested in being or becoming an entrepreneur. The cost of the seminar, which includes lunch, is $20.

Patrick Von Bargen, former chief of staff for U. S. Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and executive director of the National Commission on Entrepreneurship will provide the keynote address, entitled "Building Companies, Building Communities: Entrepreneurs and the New Economy." Prior to his public service work, Von Bargen was an attorney specializing in advising venture capital funds and high-technology start-up companies in Colorado and California.

A second speaker, Mary Jo Waits, associate director of the Morrison Institute for Public Policy at Arizona State University, will also provide a presentation entitled "What is the New Economy?" Waits was formerly the assistant director of Arizona Governor's Office of Policy Planning and Development and was appointed by President Clinton to the North American Development Bank's Advisory Board.

During the seminar there will be a panel discussion by key New Mexico policy makers and entrepreneurs on "Making it Happen in New Mexico!" Also featured at the event will be the launching of New Mexico's new Biotechmesa.com, an Internet portal designed to facilitate rapid electronic access to New Mexico biotechnology information and companies. The Laboratory's Technology Commercialization Office facilitated the formation of this new Internet portal.

"Cultivating Entrepreneurs: New Mexico's Cash Crop" is sponsored by the Office of Science and Technology of the New Mexico Economic Development Department, Los Alamos National Laboratory's Technology Commercialization Office and Santa Fe Economic Development, Inc. in partnership with Coronado Ventures Forum, EspaƱola Valley Community Development Corporation, Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation, the Santa Fe Business Incubator and the Taos Business Alliance for Economic Development.

Los Alamos National Laboratory's Technology Commercialization Office was established in 1997 to help facilitate the commercialization of Laboratory-developed technologies, the start-up and growth of regional technology companies and the economic diversification in Northern New Mexico.
