Azerbaijan Seeks to Improve Emergency Medicine

Through a recent, multi-million dollar grant, USAID will assist the Ministry of Health in Azerbaijan in developing a modern, evidence-based approach to emergency medicine. Updating Azerbaijan’s emergency medical dispatch system is a critical component of this initiative, fittingly launched by a dispatcher training in May.

Emergency medical dispatchers play a key role in the delivery of emergency care, as they are the first point of contact for patients activating the Emergency Medical System by phone. With the goal of improving the quality of dispatch services, USAID partner International Medical Corps’ Emergency Medicine Development Initiative (EMDI) hosted 50 dispatchers from the cities of Baku and Ganja for the Advanced Emergency Medical Dispatch Training, May 13-20. The course was conducted by international experts from the U.S.-based Priority Dispatch Corporation, recognized as one of the world’s leading authorities on emergency communication protocols. Dr. Sanan Kerimov, Deputy Ministry of Health delivered the keynote address at the opening session.

The dispatch training is a part of a larger, million-dollar EMDI project, which is coordinated by International Medical Corps and funded by USAID, Hess, Chevron, BTC and SCP. EMDI provides technical assistance to the Government of Azerbaijan in a collaborative effort to strengthen the delivery of emergency medical services within the broad parameters of the country’s healthcare system.
