X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy at NSLS-II

January 16, 2008

To develop the scientific and technical case for a beam line at NSLS-II designed to supply an exceptionally bright source of hard x-rays for x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) experiments over a very broad energy range. It is anticipated that a Beamline Advisory Team (BAT) will form as a result of the discussions at this workshop and that this BAT will submit a Letter of Interest to work with NSLS-II on the design, construction and commissioning of this beamline.

Syllabus

The damping wiggler source at NSLS-II will provide very high flux approaching 1014 photons per second with a continuous spectrum up to 90 keV.  This will be the world's brightest beamline dedicated to XAS measurements and will allow novel applications of inner shell spectroscopy.  Potential new applications range from XAS and micro-XAS on extremely dilute samples to XAS in large volume pressure cells to experiments with inherent low throughput, such as energy loss spectroscopy of diffraction anomalous fine structure.  The NSLS-II XAS beamline will serve a very broad range of scientific disciplines, including environmental science, catalysis and energy science, materials science, life science, magnetism, and high pressure science. This workshop will explore the new scientific opportunities that NSLS-II can provide to these many scientific disciplines. Instrumentation needed for pursuing these opportunities will also be discussed. In addition, this workshop will also address future needs of the XAS community at NSLS-II, beyond the initial project beamline.
