Speaker Biographies
Carol Bryant, Ph.D.
Dr. Carol Bryant is an Associate
Professor in Community and Family
Health at the University of South
Florida College of Public Health. Dr.
Bryant's interest in social marketing
began with the development of a
national breastfeeding promotion
program for economically disadvantaged
minorities and teenagers, called Best
Start, in 1990. She has directed
social marketing research on a wide
variety of public health projects,
including breast and cervical cancer
screening, prenatal care,
immunizations, and early childhood
intervention services. She has
directed five state WIC marketing
projects, and recently co-directed the
development of the National WIC
Breastfeeding Promotion Project.
During the past 4 years, Dr. Bryant
has co-directed the Florida Prevention
Research Center at the University of
South Florida where she is developing
and evaluating a community based
approach to social marketing. In the
Center’s first demonstration project,
USF faculty are working with a
coalition of service organization
representatives, teachers, parents,
and students to prevent smoking and
underage drinking among middle school
youth in Sarasota. In the second
demonstration project, a community
advisory board will use social
marketing techniques to improve the
health of migrant citrus workers.
In addition to research, Dr. Bryant
teaches a variety of graduate level
social marketing courses and
coordinates the National Social
Marketing and Public Health
Conference. She is also editor of the
Social Marketing Quarterly, and
Co-Director of the Florida Prevention
Research Center at the University of
South Florida.
