COOP Program News
WXCODER III:
The next generation of the WXCODER system (WXCODER III) is now in use! Highlights of the new system:
-
Improved quality control of observations as you enter them, minimizing errors.
-
Eliminates the need to send in the paper observation forms each month.
-
Interfaces with the IV-ROCS telephone system for backup purposes. If you are going to be out of town and don't want to have your backup observers logging into your account (or if your Internet connection is down), IV-ROCS would be used to relay the observations, and the data would be imported into WXCODER for you.
-
Improved editing of old observations.
Please make sure you have a full month's worth of observations in the system at the end of the month. We will be using this instead of the paper B-91's you have been submitting.
Reference Materials:
Some of you in the past had access to observing handbooks to help you with various issues. These have been updated over the last few years, and are available online.
NWS Observing Handbook #2, "Cooperative Station Observations", has been reissued as NWS Manual 10-1315 of the same name. It is available at http://www.nws.noaa.gov/directives/sym/pd01013015curr.pdf . Please note this is a huge file (21 MB), due to the many pictures that are included for reference. It is not recommended for download by those on dial-up Internet connections.
NWS Observing Handbook #6, "Cooperative Program Operations", has been divided into several different manuals (all are in PDF format):
-
NWS Instruction 10-1307, "Cooperative Station Management (1.0 MB) -- http://www.nws.noaa.gov/directives/sym/pd01013007curr.pdf
-
NWS Instruction 10-1309, "Visitation Procedures: Cooperative Observing Stations" (65 KB) -- http://www.nws.noaa.gov/directives/sym/pd01013009curr.pdf
-
NWS Instruction10-1310, "Claims for On-The-Job Injuries to Contract/Cooperative Observers" (0.8 MB) -- http://www.nws.noaa.gov/directives/sym/pd01013010curr.pdf
-
NWS Instruction 10-1314, "Cooperative Observer Awards" (1.1 MB) -- http://www.nws.noaa.gov/directives/sym/pd01013014curr.pdf
New Observers Needed:
We have several locations where there are vacancies in the observation program. It is important that we be able to move the station to a new site as quickly as possible. The sites that are needed are Philo and Arcola. If you or anyone you know are interested in taking over these stations, please contact Billy Ousley at our office.
