The federal definition of "family literacy services" means: "services that are of sufficient intensity in terms of hours, and of sufficient duration, to make sustainable changes in a family and that integrate all of the following activities: 1. interactive literacy activities between parents and their children. 2. training for parents regarding how to be the primary teacher for their children and full partners in the education of their children. 3. parent literacy training that leads to economic self-sufficiency. 4. An age-appropriate education to prepare children for success in school and life experiences." Workforce Investment Act of 1998, Section 203 You are also welcome to visit the National Center for Family Literacy website at http://www.famlit.org. And, there is also a NIFL listserv for family literacy. Next week, there will be a guest presenter, Jane Meyer, who has been quite successful in their local family literacy program incorporating "work readiness and work improvement" into their whole program and in every one of the four components mentioned in the definition above. If you would like to join the family literacy listserv, just send an e-mail to: listproc@literacy.nifl.gov In the body of the message, enter your request exactly as follows: subscribe nifl-family (first name) (last name) In your situation, you would say: subscribe nifl-family Mary Kennedy There should be no other text in the message. In a few minutes, you will receive a return message welcoming you to the listserv and giving instructions on how to post messages. If you are interested in locating family literacy programs near you, call 1-877-326-5481 and they may be able to help you. Of course, any Even Start program also a "family literacy program" and they have the same definition as the one above.
