Hello again- I am Mary Kennedy.

I run a parent education program for families referred by child protective
services at a small nonprofit. I'm currently also running a group (sort of
in-house staff development) with other staff in the agency who work long-term
(2 - 5 years) with first-time mothers deemed at-risk for abuse/neglect with a
goal to "better understand what we do." We call it "The Women's Ways" group
because we are reading Women's Ways of Knowing (by Belenky, Clinchy,
Goldberger & Tarule). Between my program and the first-time moms program, our
work is "ABE -like." In fact, many of our clientele are either working
towards a GED or are being encouraged and supported to do so. We are, as the
WWK authors suggest, teaching in "the invisible college." It is this
perspective that brings me to FOB.

I also am a returned Peace Corps Volunteer ESL teacher, have taught ESL in the
U.S. to international students and refugees. My master's degree is in
counseling, with a student/adult development perspective.

Already FOB has enriched my thinking and teaching (I'm going to try a small
project with my next parenting class-group!). I enjoy the opportunity to learn
how others in similar work do their work!

Mary Kennedy
