I was intrigued by the Explicit Literacy, and asked my wife what it might be about. She suggested porn! Joking apart, I wondered if they were going to teach "explicit phonics", which is closely related to what we call "synthetic phonics" on this side of the pond. (The 'synthesis' is the blending of sounds to make words.) After the success of the Clackmannanshire study on synthetic phonics, the government is having a review of their literacy strategy. And the opposition (Tories) are saying we should go to synthetic phonics straight away. Unfortunately, looking at the summary paper, it is clear that they are not going focus on phonics, let alone explicit phonics or synthetic phonics. They are going to focus on everything - which means focussing on nothing - just as we have been doing in the National Literacy Strategy, which is a mix of methods, guaranteed to confuse the kids. But it is not late. Your Explicit Literacy Impact Study could still embrace explicit and synthetic phonics. Then we should see some dramatic results, or I'll eat my hat (an early word to teach in synthetic phonics).
