She reponded with this information: Howard, You can forward or cut and paste this response or any part of it. How great that this information on EDP is getting out there. Thanks. See you Monday. Response to Michele's questions: The External Diploma Program is a traditional diploma, so RI is currently offering two options for adults to in ASE to receive a high school credential; the EDP and the GED. EDP best serves the adult who has been away from school for awhile (25 and older); the ESOL learner who has learned become English literate; anyone who is learning disabled in the sense that he/she works best when the work is self-paced and un-timed. Since the EDP candidate demonstrates the high school level skills in relevant contextual activities, it appeals to adults who normally do not do well on tests and in "school-like" situations. The 65 competencies that make up the EDP are closely aligned to the EFF Standards. The EDP has two parts; the Diagnostics (ABE ) phase and the Assessmnt (high school) phase. The applicant enters the Diagnostics phase to assure that the adult's basic skills in reading, writing, and math are at the level where the student will not have difficutly because of weakness in these areas. Once the EDP candidate completes the Diagnostic and enters the Assessment, the average time for completion is six-eight months. In order to compete in this short a time period, the candidate must be motivated, skilled and focused. EDP is a viable option to the GED for an adult needing a high school credential.
