ID Requirements for Guests & Visitors

U.S. citizens must bring photo-identification that has been issued by the federal government, such as a passport, or by your state government, such as a current driver’s license or a photo-identification card issued to non-drivers by a state’s motor vehicles department. Please be aware, however, that some states issue driver’s licenses that do not have photographs or that are marked with the statement “cannot be used for identification purposes;” these documents, therefore, cannot be used for photo-identification.

Non-US citizens must bring their valid original passport (with I-94 attached) and applicable visa with any USCIS documentation supporting the visa status and/or renewals, (e.g., form I-20 for F-1 students or form DS2019 for J-1 visa holders) to Brookhaven upon their initial check-in and each time their visa status changes thereafter. Individuals with employment authorization cards must also bring their card with them upon their initial check-in at BNL.

Lawful permanent resident of the United States (previously called permanent resident aliens) must bring their Green Card or passport with a valid I-551 stamp AND, in addition, a Government-issued identification document which includes a photograph, such as a passport or driver’s license with them upon their initial check-in at BNL.

Visa Waiver Program (VWP) Participants: All VWP travelers must present machine-readable passports (MRP) for entry into the United States.   For entry onto BNL property you must present a machine-readable passport and a valid I-94 card.

Visa advisory: When you arrive at the port of entry be sure that the inspection officer marks your I-94 arrival/departure record with either a W/B or a B-1 business visa.  Check your I-94 card for accuracy before you leave the airport. Foreign nationals with the following visa classifications are NOT eligible to hold a BNL appointment and, therefore are not eligible to work at BNL: W/T, B2, J-2, and H-4.  Family members who accompany you, however, may hold a W/T, B-2, J-2 or H-4 visa.   For more information, about US visas requirements and eligibility go to U.S. Department of State information. If you are a traveler from a VWP country and your passport does not meet these requirements listed on the U.S. Department of State web link above, you must either:

  • obtain a visa in your valid passport for entry into the United States, or
  • contact your country’s passport issuing agency or authority for a new passport

Canadian, Mexican, Bermudian, and Caribbean citizens:  A valid passport is required for entry into the United States by air for citizens of Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. Passport must be provided upon arrival to BNL.

Canadians entering the US by land who do not hold a valid passport are required to provide a birth certificate or certificate of Canadian naturalization upon arrival to BNL.

Mexican citizens traveling by air or by land are required to provide a valid passport and visa upon arrival to BNL.

Further Instructions: Instructions on identification requirements for subsequent visits to BNL will be provided upon check-in. This documentation is required for issuance of appointments and any subsequent appointment renewals. A Brookhaven photo ID card cannot be issued without the appropriate identification.
