Emergency Watershed Protection Program - Post Fire Restoration in Southern California 2007

Last Modified: 08/26/2008 11:18 AM

USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) offers various types of technical and financial help for those who have been affected by natural resource disasters. Teams are already forming and assessing the needs and opportunities for conservation assistance following Southern California’s wildfires.

For communities, NRCS oversees the Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) program that helps fire-scarred watersheds recover and protects life and property threatened by the erosion or floods that too often follow fires. All projects require a government sponsor.

For homeowners there is advice on preventing erosion on the sloped properties typical of many southern California neighborhoods. NRCS teams will be attending community meetings and working with partners to provide information.

For farmers and ranchers, such as those who lost nursery, citrus, avocadoes or other crops and agricultural infrastructure in the fires, NRCS offers resource management technical assistance.
