Americans of all income levels are facing an economic climate unlike any seen in several generations. And they are worried about their future. For many Americans, poverty was an abstract concept. Now it is all too real and imminent.

And yet there are things that can be done to help economically struggling Americans, policies that could actually cut the current poverty rate in half in the next 10 years. Read More >>

States' Attempts to Clean up Voting Lists Result in Unlawful Voter Purging and Suppression
Tens of thousands of voters have registered in preparation for the 2008 presidential election; these numbers, however, are being offset by large-scale purges of voters from voter registration lists in key swing states. (October 17, 2008)

President Signs Bill to Authorize Re-Examination of Murders from the Civil Rights Era
On October 7, President Bush signed the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act of 2007 into law, which directs the Department of Justice to investigate and prosecute individuals involved in criminal civil rights violations from the civil rights era. (October 9, 2008)

Justice Department Testifies in Senate Judiciary Committee on Voter Protection
The Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on September 9 to see how the Justice Department is preparing for the 2008 election. The committee asked witnesses from the Justice Department what steps the department is taking ensure that eligible voters are not kept from voting. (October 1, 2008)
