A winter storm affected much of the
middle part of the nation the first week of January, as waves of low
pressure moved northeast along a frontal boundary from the southern Plains to the Ohio Valley.
A band of freezing precipitation fell over parts of Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.
General ice accumulations across Kansas and Missouri were between 1/2 to 1
inch; some reports as high as 1.5 inches were received. Lighter ice accumulations of 1/4
to 1/2 inch occurred across portions of central Illinois, between I-72 and
I-80. Sleet accumulations of up to 1.5 inches were also been reported in Kansas and Missouri.
Numerous power outages have occurred due to many downed tree branches.
North of this band, heavy snow fell from Colorado and Wyoming to
Michigan. Up to 11 inches of snow have been reported in Wyoming, 14 inches
in South Dakota and Nebraska, 5 inches in Kansas, 17 inches in Iowa and 15
inches in northwest Illinois. Significant winds
caused blowing and drifting snow, and adding to the damage from the ice storm.
Further to the south, heavy rainfall of
2 to 6 inches occurred from southern Missouri, into central and southern
Illinois and Indiana. These totals, well above normal for the entire
month, followed a period of much above normal temperatures, which melted
the snowpack from the pre-Christmas storm. The combination of the
two led to many rivers rising above flood stage.
