Bow Lake Transfer and Recycling Station Renovation Project
Project Background and PurposeThe King County Solid Waste Division will construct a new transfer and recycling station at the site of the existing Bow Lake Transfer and Recycling Station in Tukwila and on adjacent property to the north that the division plans to purchase for this project. The current transfer station was built in 1977 and replaced a smaller, outdated transfer facility. A landfill operated at the site from the early 1940s until 1961. In 2005, Bow Lake's operating hours were increased to 24 hours a day on weekdays as the facility began to play an enhanced role in the county's solid waste transfer system. It is King County's busiest transfer station based on total tonnage handled. Upgrades to the Bow Lake station are necessary for several reasons:
The first stage in this renovation project was the development of a Facility Master Plan that will provide a guide for the site design and operational improvements to be made to the station. The Facility Master Plan was developed in 2006 and approved by the King County Council in May 2007.
