Case: Coral Cases, Elpis, FL

Date of incident: November 11, 1989.

Location: Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Florida.

Trustees:

Overview: On November 11, 1989, the 143-meter freighter M/V Elpis ran aground on a Federally protected coral reef within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, managed and protected by NOAA in cooperation with the State of Florida's Department of Environmental Protection. The grounding and subsequent attempts to free the ship resulted in significant injury to the reef substrate and resident marine organisms. Two large craters were caused by the ship's propellers and an extensive rubble field was created by the grinding of the ship's hull against the reef.
