KING COUNTY ANNOUNCES JOHN KLOPFENSTEIN
AS FIRE MARSHAL

Today the Department of Development and Environmental Services (DDES) announced John Klopfenstein as King County's new fire marshal. Klopfenstein brings to the position a long history in the fire service, the last 18 years of which have been spent as a Deputy Fire Marshal responsible for fire inspections in unincorporated King County. The King County Fire Marshal's Office is responsible for fire engineering reviews on large building permits, annual fire safety inspections, and fire investigations in the unincorporated area and several contract cities.

DDES Director Stephanie Warden said, "I am pleased to have John on the DDES Senior Management Team. In addition to his fire service experience, John has worked in the King County Emergency Coordination Center and has also demonstrated a solid customer service ethic during his tenure with DDES.

Fire safety reviews are a crucial component of the permit process. Similarly, annual inspections for existing structures help to ensure that these buildings operate safely in unincorporated king County. The Fire Investigations unit also has a long history of success in finding the source of suspicious fires and I expect that all of these services will be of tremendous benefit to the public under John's management."

Additional information on services provided by the King County Fire Marshal's Office can be found at www.metrokc.gov/ddes/fire, or from the DDES Web site home page, www.metrokc.gov/ddes, simply click on Fire Marshal's Office.
