EU-25 to Return as Net Grain Exporter

With expected bumper crops, the EU-25 will return as a net grain exporter in 2004/05. For wheat, an expected record harvest will allow exports to jump by over 5 million tons, creating stronger competition for other major exporters in key Mediterranean markets such as Egypt. Domestic prices have fallen considerably in the last few months, making EU exports more competitive. Greater supplies will also reduce EU-25 import demand, with purchases from Canada and the United States expected to fall. For coarse grains, larger domestic crops, as well as greater availability of wheat for feeding, will greatly reduce EU-25 imports. Sorghum imports are expected to virtually disappear, and corn imports, primarily from South America, are expected to drop by 50 percent. Barley exports are expected to double next year, creating strong competition for Ukraine, Russia, and Australia in North African and Middle Eastern markets. |
