Hersey Man Sentenced for Federal Firearms Offenses Bangor, Maine: United States Attorney Paula D. Silsby announced that Ronald L. Kaelin, 51, of Hersey, Maine, was sentenced on August 4, 2008, in U.S. District Court in Bangor, to 33 months of imprisonment and 3 years supervised release, for being a felon in possession of a firearm, and for possessing a firearm while there was an active state protection order against him for domestic violence. Court records reveal that on July 17, 2007, Kaelin was convicted in Arizona of felony arson. On July 23, 2007, the District Court in Houlton issued a court order against Kaelin, restraining him from harassing, stalking or threatening an intimate partner, and that order specifically prohibited Kaelin from possessing firearms. On August 8, 2007, Kaelin retrieved a shotgun that he was storing at his parents’ home. The Maine State Police responded to a call and found Kaelin with the shotgun. This case was a part of Maine’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative which coordinates the efforts of federal and state agencies. The Project’s goal is to increase successful prosecution of firearms cases and educate potential offenders on the serious consequences of illegal gun use and possession. United States Attorney Silsby praised the investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Maine State Police. #### |
