WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Commerce's office of Critical Infrastructure Assurance (CIAO) next week will launch a cooperative venture with CXO Media, Inc. to increase awareness of economic security, national security and privacy risks pertaining to the protection of globally interconnected computer systems.
The Critical Infrastructure Assurance Office and CXO, which publishes CIO and Darwin magazines, are developing a series of fora to educate business leaders throughout the U.S. about the risks posed by cyber-crime and cyber-terrorism. The first of these, entitled "The Internet Security Policy Forum," will be held on Wednesday, September 27, 2000 at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC, and will be webcast live. (see Webcast details below) U.S. Secretary of Commerce Norman Y. Mineta, the featured speaker, will address the audience on security risks and the impact on U.S. business.
Lou Dobbs, former host of CNN's "Moneyline News Hour with Lou Dobbs," will moderate a panel of governmental, political and industry leaders for the live webcast. "An audience of 100 top chief executive officers (CEOs) and chief information officers (CIOs) will participate in an interactive, television talk show format" according to Lew McCreary, editorial director and executive vice president of CXO Media, which is producing the event.
"Going on-line is a market imperative, not an option," states John Tritak, director of the CIAO. "Our nation's critical infrastructure, including electric power, water, transportation, hospitals and police are being wired in an ever-increasing digital nervous system. And while we all benefit from improved quality of service and efficiency, those benefits come with risks. We need to eliminate those risks, and ensure the American people that their lives, and their livelihoods, will not be hurt."
