GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $1.56 MILLION FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO KIKIAOLA SMALL BOAT HARBOR

For Immediate Release:  September 4, 2008

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $1,560,000 in additional construction funds to dredge the inner harbor basin area of Kīkīaola Small Boat Harbor on Kaua‘i. Dredging of the federal portion of the small boat harbor, including the entrance channel, is also being performed as part of this project.

The state has partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to undertake several improvements at Kīkīaola Small Boat Harbor. In addition to dredging work, these upgrades include the construction of a higher breakwater to provide greater protection for the inner harbor and other navigational enhancements.

“This project will make Kīkīaola Small Boat Harbor safer for recreational and commercial boaters and is in line with efforts by our Administration to upgrade and expand small boat harbors statewide and improve state infrastructure on all islands,” said Governor Lingle.

The total project cost for Kīkīaola Small Boat Harbor is estimated to be $28,148,399, which includes a total of $5,960,000 in state funds and $22,188,339 in federal funds.

The dredging is scheduled to begin in early 2009. All project work, including the construction of the new breakwater, is scheduled to be completed by July 2009.
