The purpose of the Climate and Land Use Change Processes in East
Africa project is to gain an integrated understanding of the interactions
among the climate, land use (vegetation type), and human activities
in East Africa, specifically the countries of Kenya, Uganda, and
Tanzania. GLERL's portion of this work focuses on modeling of surface-atmosphere
interaction using the Coupled Hydrosphere-Atmosphere Research Model.
While the overall project is not concentrated
on lakes, there are a number of likely impacts on the African Great
Lakes from changes in land use, some of which can be readily derived
from regional climate simulations. Land use is know to affect precipitation,
particularly at low latitudes, and it also directly influences evapotranspiration
and runoff.
