What is the National Public Health Performance Standards Program (NPHPSP)?

The National Public Health Performance Standard Program (NPHPSP) is a National Partnership initiative that has developed National Public Health Performance Standards for state and local public health systems and for public health governing bodies.  Partners in the effort include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American Public Health Association (APHA), Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH), National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI), and Public Health Foundation (PHF).  As a national partner in the NPHPSP, PHF is the lead organization in administering the data reporting page and in providing tools and technical assistance on performance improvement and quality improvement.

Nearly 1,000 sites around the country have participated in the NPHPSP and made it the nation's leading Program to strengthen public health systems.  With the rising interest in quality improvement and accreditation on the horizon, there has never been a better time to use the NPHPSP tools and educate your staff, board, and partners on the 10 Essential Public Health Services. The vision, mission, and goals of the NPHPSP is provided on the CDC web site.

NPHPSP Data Reporting Page
PHF manages the NPHPSP online data system that allows NPHPSP users to enter their assessment data and receive performance improvement reports.  In the reporting system, users of the NPHPSP instruments can request for a new User ID, input data from their current performance assessment and download reports and data.

NPHPSP Online Resource Center
The NPHPSP Online Resource Center is the only collection of resources designed to help public health systems and boards of health improve their performance related to Essential Public Health Services and the national standards.

NORC LogoOnce you have your NPHPSP performance assessment reports and data, what are your next steps?  This online resource center can help you find information you need to keep your momentum going.  You can view all State, Local, and Governance resources or conduct a targeted resource search for each instrument after selecting a specific Essential Public Health Service or Model Standard.  You can also mine these resources before you decide on your final priorities.

For additional resources to help you implement the National Public Health Performance Standards Program, visit NPHPSP section of the Public Health Infrastructure Resource Center.
In addition, PHF has prepared case studies highlighting the experiences of jurisdictions using the National Public Health Performance Standards and has archived Improving Performance newsletters available.
