Obama's multicultural heritage is the foodstuff of a great menu. So if you're staying home during the inauguration, make a pot of chili, one of Obama's favorite dishes. Serve soul food to hail the first African American president. Tilt toward Africa by cooking Kenyan to honor the birthplace of Obama's father.

The recent move to a larger space hasn't dimmed the magic of the city's best Italian BYOB. If anything, the long and lively rustic space has only improved the trattoria, allowing Roman-born chef-owner Gianluca Demontis the room to begin taking a few more risks, adding gutsy new dishes like snail-porcini soup and sea-flavored carbonara to an already stellar repertoire of deceptively simple but well-wrought classics.
Dinner Tuesday through Saturday, 5:30 to 9:45 p.m.; Sunday, 5 to 8:45 p.m. Closed Monday.

EDITOR'S NOTE: After years of yo-yo dieting, Kathy Manweiler discovered ways to cook and eat healthier without giving up the foods she loved. Those recipes helped her lose 100 pounds and keep the weight off. Now she's sharing healthy cooking tips with readers through her weekly "Don't Say Diet" column, which debuts today in YO! Food.
As I was telling my family at dinner the other day, the Middle East is a mess - still; many friends' jobs are kaput; the plumber just sent an $800 bill for unclogging the sewer; and news of a massive Ponzi scheme means that there's pretty much nobody anybody can trust - but look on the bright side:
We were opening Christmas gifts when my much better half dropped a package on my lap - a cold, heavy package. Curious (and suddenly chilly), I opened it. Bacon. Six pounds of artisan bacon, from thick-cut hickory-smoked to jalapeño-spiced and apple-cinnamon, varieties hailing from Virginia to Upstate New York, Texas to Tennessee.
There was always a pinch of magic to the pancetta-scented air inside the old Melograno. With little more than 34 seats, an open kitchen, and a bare-white decor, that bright corner room became one of the city's best trattorias and a jam-packed emblem of the BYOB revolution.
With Robert Burns Day fast approaching, and visions of haggis tributes bagpiping in my head, I can't help but crave a fine new bottle of single-malt whiskey.
