International Health
How does NICHD support international health?
For more than 40 years, the NICHD has supported research to address the health needs of people in the United States and abroad.  NICHD-funded scientists have conducted landmark studies in Bolivia, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, and Peru.  The Institute has supported extramural research and intramural collaborations in more than 70 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas, including Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean.

In addition to conducting and supporting research, NICHD staff have supported global health in a variety of ways, including:

  • Training hundreds of scientists from countries throughout the world
  • Collaborating with foreign scientists, institutions, and laboratories on projects of mutual interest
  • Sponsoring, organizing, and presenting at major international colloquia, symposia, and conferences
  • Serving as consultants and advisers to multinational organizations, international health agencies, ministries of health, and foreign research laboratories and institutes.
What is the Office of Prevention Research and International Programs (PRIP)?
The PRIP works to improve health worldwide by providing leadership, coordination, and support for NICHD’s global heath mission and activities in collaboration with NICHD’s Centers and Divisions, other NIH ICs, and our national and global health partners.

The PRIP Office accomplishes its mission and tasks through:

  • Policy and program coordination, advocacy, identifying and mobilizing resources and opportunities, and building partnerships
  • Providing leadership in the development of cross-cutting policy, plans, and programs related to NICHD’s global health interests
  • Assisting NICHD’s Centers/Divisions/Branches and Offices in enhancing their international research portfolios and other global health activities
