Neighbor Island Community Advisory Councils
-
Governor Linda Lingle created Neighbor Island Community Advisory Councils to give the neighbor islands a stronger voice in state government. The six neighbor island councils -- Maui, Moloka`i, Lana`i, East Hawai`i, West Hawai`i and Lana`i -- help the Lingle-Aiona Administration identify issues of importance to each island, recommend ways to improve state government and enhance the quality of life for all residents. The Councils for West Hawai`i, East Hawai`i, Maui and Kaua`i each consist of nine members appointed by the Governor, the Moloka`i Council has seven members, and the Lana`i Council has five members. The Councils include individuals with expertise in business, education, native Hawaiian issues, social services, arts and culture, energy, agriculture and the environment. The members serve as volunteers and receive no compensation. The Neighbor Island Community Advisory Councils hold monthly public meetings to seek community input on key issues, public priorities, and recommendations for state boards and commissions.
