GOVERNOR LINGLE APPOINTS THREE TO HAWAI`I HEALTH SYSTEMS CORPORATION BOARD

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle today announced the appointment of three new board members to the Hawai`i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC).  Russell T. Stodd, M.D., Danilo N. Ablan, M.D., and Andrew Don, M.D., will serve on the 12-member board.  HHSC, a public benefit corporation, is the nation’s fourth largest public hospital.  Stodd and Don will serve as at-large representatives for Maui, with their terms running until June 30, 2005, and June 30, 2007, respectively.  Alban will serve as an at-large representative for O`ahu through June 30, 2007.  The appointments are effective immediately and require Senate confirmation.  “Our state hospitals are vital for ensuring all our residents have access to affordable, quality health care,” said Governor Lingle.  “These three individuals have been part of our medical community for years, and I appreciate their willingness and commitment to share their experience and expertise to ensure the continued improvement of our public hospitals.”

Russell T. Stodd, M.D.
Russell Stodd, M.D., is an ophthalmologist with Aloha Eye Clinic, Ltd. in Kahului, Maui.  He was appointed chief of staff of Maui Memorial Hospital in 1985.  Prior to moving to Hawai`i in 1973, Stodd had a private practice in Portland, Oregon.  He also gained medical experience in Mexico, Brazil, Panama, and Sudan.  Stodd has been a fellow with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, vice president of the Pacific Coast Oto-Ophthalmological Society, president of the Hawai`i Medical Association, past president of the Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology, and past president of Maui County Medical Society.  He is a member of the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Society of Cataracts and Refractive Surgery.  Stodd is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and National Board of Medical Examiners.  He was one of two Hawai`i delegates to the AMA House of Delegates, representing our state for ten years. Stodd earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Oregon. 

Andrew Don, M.D.
Andrew Don, M.D., serves on the active staff and consulting staff of Maui Memorial Medical Center, as well as the consulting staffs of Hale Makua in Wailuku and the Kula Sanatorium.  Don has served as chair of professional education for the American Cancer Society Maui Unit, cancer coordinator and chief of surgery for the Maui Memorial Hospital, president of Maui County Medical Society, president of the Hawai`i Medical Association, and chair of the Hawai`i QUEST Medical Advisory Committee.  He is a member of the American Medical Association, Hawai`i Medical Association, Maui County Medical Association and Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society.  Don has a board certification in otorhinolaryngology and is a fellow with the American Academy of Otorhinolaryngology and the American College of Surgeons.  He is a graduate of the Tulane University School of Medicine and the University of Southern California. 

Danilo N. Ablan, M.D.
Danilo Ablan, M.D., is medical director of the Intensive Care Unit/Pulmonary Division of Saint Francis Medical Center-West.  He is also a staff member at Saint Francis Medical Center, Kuakini Medical Center, Kapi`olani Medical Center at Pali Momi, Wahiawa General Hospital and Queen’s Medical Center.  Ablan has served as a pulmonologist/intensivist with Straub Clinic and Hospital, a senior clinical fellow in critical care medicine at Montefiore Medical Center Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, and a fellow in pulmonary diseases at Hackensack University Medical Center, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Beth Israel Medical Center and Bergen Pines Medical Center.  He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Pulmonary Diseases and American Board of Critical Care Medicine, and earned a fellowship with the American College of Chest Physicians.  He is the Philippine Medical Association of Hawai`i President, and a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, Society of Critical Care, American Medical Association and Hawai`i Medical Association.  He is a graduate of University of the Philippines Institute of Health Occupational and Industrial Medicine, Ateneo De Manila University Graduate School of Business Administration, and the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in Manila.
