In July, 43 states and the District of Columbia recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 6 states registered decreases, and 1 state had no change. Between June 2008 and July 2008 nonfarm payroll employment increased in 14 states and the District of Columbia, and decreased in 36 states. Unemployment rates were higher in July than a year earlier in 338 of the 369 metropolitan areas, lower in 25 areas, and unchanged in 6 areas. Among the 310 metropolitan areas for which nonfarm payroll data were available in July, 188 metropolitan areas reported over-the-year increases in employment, 110 reported decreases, and 12 had no change. rose in 16 states, and were unchanged in 6 states from 2006. Employment-population
ratios decreased in 28 states, increased in 17 states and the District of Columbia,
