Cyclone Chris Hits Australia

Packing wind gusts of up to 200 km per hour (125 mph), Cyclone Chris came ashore of Australia’s northwestern coast, on February 6, 2002, and passed just south of Port Hedland.

Cyclone Chris is one of the most powerful storms ever to hit Australia. Initially, the storm contained wind gusts of up to 200 km per hour (125 mph), but shortly after making landfall it weakened to a Category 4 storm. Meteorologists expect the cyclone to weaken quickly as it moves further inland.
