Alaska Community Profiles
The Alaska Fisheries Science Center compiled baseline socioeconomic information about 136 Alaska communities most involved in commercial fisheries. Communities were selected by assessing fishery-involvement indicators including landings, processors, vessel homeports, vessel ownership, crew licenses, and gear operator permits. The profiles compile information from the US Census, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Alaska Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission, National Marine Fisheries Service Restricted Access Management Division, Alaska Department of Community and Economic Development, and various community groups, websites, and archives. Each profile contains information about location, demography, history, current economy, governance, facilities, commercial fisheries, recreational fisheries and subsistence fisheries. Introductory materials cover purpose, methods, and an overview of the profiled communities in the larger context of the state of Alaska and North Pacific fisheries. The profiles were published as NOAA Technical Report NMFS-AFSC-160 in December 2005. The Technical Report can be downloaded as a complete document (17.6 MB) from http://www.afsc.noaa.gov/Publications/techmemos.htm. All information in the Technical Report is reproduced below in links to small pdf files for easier access. For more information or to comment on this project, contact Jennifer.Sepez@noaa.gov
Profiles of 125 communities outside of Alaska (from Washington to New Jersey) involved in North Pacific fisheries were completed in conjunction with profiles of West Coast fishing communities, and are available in preliminary draft form at http://www.nwfsc.noaa.gov/research/divisions/sd/communityprofiles/index.cfm.
