Manure Management

Manure waste from animal feeding operations can jeopardize water and air quality. ERS analyzes the extent of manure problems, their environmental implications, the environmental and economic impacts of alternate management practices, and the economic impacts of regulations and potential regulations. Research in this subject area focuses on the on-farm utilization of manure as a nutrient source for crop production.

Spotlights

Confined Animal Production and Manure Nutrients—This study estimates manure nutrient production and the capacity of farmland to assimilate nutrients. Most manure is produced on operations that cannot fully apply it to their own land at agronomic rates.

Confined Animal and Manure Nutrient Data System—This system provides State and National data about confined animal numbers and associated manure nutrients. These data are based on analysis of the data collected for the Census of Agriculture.
