Public Schedule for the Week of March 24-29, 2008

March 24, Governor Lingle will meet with Dr. Jerris Hedges, the new dean of the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine.

March 24, Governor Lingle and Lt. Governor Aiona will have a working lunch meeting with four students who are serving as leaders for a day.  The students are winners of the annual Leader for a Day essay contest in which students submit essays about the challenges youth face and how they would address the issues.  Alex Shea of Kahuku High School and Hannah Broderick of Aikahi Elementary will serve as Governor for a day.  Celeste Sipili of Olomana Intermediate and High School and Brianna Goveia of Kailua Intermediate will serve as Lt. Governor for a day.

March 25, Governor Lingle, Lt. Governor Aiona and Adjutant General Robert Lee will join a joint session of the Legislature to present the Hawai‘i Medal of Honor to the families of service members with ties to Hawai‘i who have died this past year in the line of duty.

March 25, Governor Lingle will attend the third annual O‘ahu Interscholastic Association Athletic Foundation banquet to support the athletic programs of 29 member schools that compete in 19 different junior varsity and varsity sports.

March 26, HOLIDAY – PRINCE JONAH KŪHIŌ KALANIANA‘OLE DAY

March 26, Governor Lingle, Lt. Governor Aiona and Micah Kāne, chair, Hawaiian Homes Commission, will dedicate the new headquarters of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.  This is the first state department to move its headquarters to O‘ahu’s second city of Kapolei.  The new office complex, Hale Kalaniana‘ole, is named after Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole, the father of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act.

March 27 – 29, Governor Lingle and Lt. Governor Aiona will host the Inaugural 2008 NASA / BAE Systems FIRST in Hawai‘i Regional Robotics Competition at the University of Hawai`i Stan Sheriff Center.  Thirty-seven high school robotics teams (700 students) from Hawai‘i, West Virginia, New Jersey, Florida and California will test their academic skills, innovation, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication skills and teamwork.  The Lingle-Aiona Administration is supporting robotics as a key component of the Hawai‘i Innovation Initiative to engage Hawai‘i students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and to foster the innovation capacity in Hawai‘i residents.  The event is free and open to the public.  Additional information, including a media kit, including schedule of events, team roster, challenge details, video and photos are available at:  www.robotics.hawaii.gov.
