Cropping Practices

The use of efficient farming practices has resulted in greatly increased agricultural productivity, but has also raised concerns about the extensive use of commercial fertilizers and chemical pesticides. ERS researches the factors that influence farmers' decisions to use various pest, nutrient, and soil management practices such as crop rotations and crop residue management, as well as seed and water use and considers the potential environmental and economic effects of these decisions.

Spotlights

Cropping Practices Data Summaries—Annual field-level surveys are summarized to show the current status and trends in crop production practices for several large-acreage field crops (corn, soybeans, wheat, and cotton).

Agricultural Chemicals and Production Technology—Farmers combine inputs and their management skills into practices and systems to produce food and fiber. Society wants food and fiber products that are low-cost, safe to consume, and production systems that preserve the environment. These often competing goals are reflected in how the inputs are selected, combined, and managed at the farm level.
